Smash is a French file-transfer service with a generous free plan. You don’t need an account to send, files stay available for up to 7 days, and there’s no hard size limit. It’s a good service. This page explains how it differs from BoltShare, which works in a completely different way, so you can tell which fits a particular transfer.
How Smash works
Smash is an upload service. You upload your files to Smash’s servers (it has servers in several regions and picks one near you), then the receiver downloads them from a link. Once your upload finishes, you can close your computer.
On the free plan, transfers up to 2 GB go through normally. Larger transfers are still allowed, but they join a queue behind paying Pro users, so a big free transfer can wait before it’s processed. Smash Pro removes the queue and adds features like download tracking and custom branding.
How BoltShare works
BoltShare doesn’t upload anything. When the receiver opens your link, the file streams from your browser to theirs in real time and is saved straight to their Downloads folder. There’s no queue, because there’s nothing to process: the transfer is the download. The trade-off is that your tab has to stay open until the receiver has everything.

Where Smash is the better pick
- The receiver will download later. Smash’s 7-day availability on the free plan is generous. If the other person won’t be ready for hours or days, use an upload service.
- You want a password on the link. Smash includes this even on the free plan.
- You want proof of delivery. Smash Pro can tell you when your files were viewed and downloaded.
Where BoltShare is the better pick
- Big files on the free plan. A 20 GB folder on BoltShare starts arriving immediately. On Smash Free, anything over 2 GB waits in a queue first.
- You both have time right now. Because there’s no upload stage, a live transfer often finishes in about half the time of upload-then-download.
- You’d rather your files never sat on a server. With Direct P2P mode, the file goes device to device, encrypted end to end.
A quick way to decide
Ask one question: will the receiver download it while I’m still at my computer? If yes, a live transfer is faster and keeps your files off other people’s servers.
