WeTransfer Gratuit: Is WeTransfer Still Free?
BoltShare Team · Last reviewed
Short answer: yes, WeTransfer still has a free plan (“WeTransfer gratuit” in French), but it’s much smaller than it used to be. You can send and receive 3 GB in total per month, across up to 10 transfers, links last up to 3 days, and you need a WeTransfer account to send. It’s also limited to personal, non-commercial use.
If you need to send more than that without paying, BoltShare is free with no size limit and no account. The catch is that the receiver downloads while you’re online. The rest of this page explains the free plan, how to tell when you’ve hit its limits, and your free options beyond it.
If you were looking for WeTransfer itself, it’s at wetransfer.com. BoltShare is a separate service and isn’t affiliated with WeTransfer.

The 3 GB is a monthly total, not a per-file limit. One 2 GB video and two 500 MB folders use up the whole month. That’s the change that catches most people out: older guides still describe the previous free plan, which let you send up to 2 GB per transfer with no monthly cap.
Signs you’ve hit the free limit
- WeTransfer says you’ve reached your limit, or asks you to upgrade before a transfer will start.
- You get asked to log in or create an account before sending. That isn’t a limit: free sending now needs an account.
The allowance resets each month. Until then, the options are to wait, pay for a plan, or send another way.
What WeTransfer’s paid plans add
- Starter ($8/month): up to 300 GB per month, still 10 transfers.
- Ultimate ($23/month): no limits on transfer size or number, links that don’t expire, passwords and branding.
- Teams ($19 per user/month, minimum 2): Ultimate plus team management.
Paid plans are worth it if you deliver files to clients every week and want a download page with your branding. For occasional big files, a free tool usually does the job.
Free ways to send more than WeTransfer allows
BoltShare: no size limit, no account
BoltShare sends the file live from your browser to the receiver’s. Nothing is uploaded or stored, so there’s no reason to cap the size, count your transfers or ask you to sign up.
- Open boltshare.in and drop in the file or folder.
- Send the link, or show the QR code.
- Keep the tab open until the receiver’s download finishes.
Because nothing is stored, the receiver can’t download it tomorrow. If they’re ready now, though, it’s usually faster than WeTransfer, because their download starts the moment they open the link instead of after your upload finishes. It also works on office and mobile networks, and picks up where it left off if the connection drops. How to send large files online has the details.
Smash: free, no account, files kept for days
Smash is a French upload service with no hard size limit on the free plan and no account to send. Free transfers over 2 GB wait in a queue, and files are kept for up to 7 days. It’s a good free choice when the receiver will download later.
A cloud drive you already have
If you already have Google Drive, OneDrive or iCloud storage, sharing a link from there costs nothing extra. It’s slower for one-off big files, because everything is uploaded and then downloaded, and it uses up your storage.
Which free option should you use?
| Situation | Best free choice |
|---|---|
| Under 3 GB this month, receiver downloads later | WeTransfer Free is fine |
| Bigger file, receiver can download now | BoltShare |
| Bigger file, receiver downloads in the next few days | Smash |
| File is already in your cloud storage | Share a cloud-drive link |
